Catherine McAuley Catholic College Chapel

Designed by Webber Architects for the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, Catherine McAuley Catholic Chapel is a landmark project of State Significance, forming the spiritual and communal heart of a new Catholic precinct in Port Stephens.
More than a place of worship, the chapel is a powerful symbol of spiritual strength, environmental responsibility, and community cohesion. It is a standalone yet deeply connected civic building bringing together parish, school, and community under one bold architectural vision.
The masterplan’s radial layout, symbolising the Holy Trinity, anchors the Chapel at the centre of the site. Its powerful form defined by expressive steel russes, cantilevered rooflines, and carefully selected natural materials conveys honesty, resilience, and transparency, values echoed in the life of the Catholic community it serves.
Internally, the Chapel seats 500 and offers refined spaces including confessionals, parish offices, sacristy, and back-of-house areas. The drama of procession is choreographed through scale, with a low, welcoming narthex transitioning into a generous, light-filled sanctuary. Views to landscaped courtyards and the adjacent school enhance a sense of openness and inclusion.
What sets this project apart is its commitment to environmental and social sustainability. The development has been designed and constructed to the equivalent of a 4 Star Green Star standard, reflecting Best Practice in environmentally responsible design. The building sits comfortably within its landscape, embodying a sensitive response to both place and purpose.
Hosting a range of liturgical and civic events Catherine McAuley Catholic College is now a celebrated focal point of the Port Stephens pastoral region and demonstrates how architecture can unite faith, learning, and community while responding sensitively to site, culture, and climate.
