Pairingand Preserving Historic and Contemporary Elements

Originally constructed in 1916, this two-story landmark became known as the "Parcel Post Bank" because its three brick masonry facades were shipped to the site through the U.S. Postal Service during construction.

More than a century later, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation that preserved its historic character while adapting it for contemporary use. The project retained and restored the three original brick facades, while the interior walls, structural system, and roof were removed and replaced. The original Main Street entrance was reconstructed using historic documentation, and the building's new south façade was designed as a contemporary expression, clad in stone sourced from a local quarry. The modern façade complements the historic masonry while clearly distinguishing new construction from the original building.

At a time when many financial institutions are reducing their presence in rural communities, Zions Bank chose a different path—investing in one of Vernal's most recognizable historic buildings as a tangible demonstration of its long-term commitment to the community and the surrounding region. Today, the building serves as a modern financial center on the ground floor, with the upper level designed to accommodate community tenants. The project illustrates how adaptive reuse can preserve a community's architectural heritage while supporting its future. Since its completion, the renovated landmark has been embraced by the community and has become part of a broader revitalization of downtown Vernal. The city's investment in nearby streetscapes and public spaces has built on that momentum, strengthening the historic downtown as the civic and commercial heart of the region.
