At the confluence of major rivers, in the center of a state whose corners span diverse geographies, Columbia, Missouri, is home to the State Historical Society of Missouri Center for Missouri Studies.

Our team approached this project with three primary partners—the historical society, the University of Missouri, and the state—each with a distinct mission and programmatic agenda. The charge was to bring these separate entities under one roof, aligning their unique needs within a cohesive library that serves their individual constituencies while presenting a unified civic presence.

The design strategy integrates the notion of confluence into the building’s parti, creating layers of overlap between campus and city, past and present, art on display and the archives, and the ongoing dialogue within the state. The form evokes limestone masses cantilevering over the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, and the exterior is clad in locally sourced Ste. Genevieve Marble.

Our team approached this as an opportunity to rethink how a library engages the public. The program includes an auditorium, event space, reading room, archives, flexible galleries, classrooms, café, gift shop, and bookstore. Originally founded to preserve the state’s newspapers, the library now houses one of the largest collections of Missouri newspapers, manuscripts, photographs, rare books, oral histories, and maps.

The gallery features a collection by Missouri painter and muralist Thomas Hart Benton, a leader of the Regionalist movement known for depicting everyday life. His work informed the monumental stair that cantilevers over the lobby, forming a podium for lectures. The curved balustrade echoes Benton’s fluid brushwork and reinforces the geometric forms of American realist modernism.

Today, the State Historical Society of Missouri Center for Missouri Studies provides a venue for collecting, preserving, publishing, exhibiting, and making available materials related to all aspects and periods of Missouri history.
