Understanding its need for expanded recreation services, Texas A&M University set out to design a new satellite recreation facility known as the Southside Recreation Center.

Located next to the University Golf Course, this facility alleviates overcrowding in the existing campus recreation center, offers more student employment opportunities, and ultimately make recreation more accessible to students.

The building showcases the energetic recreation program. A grand entry plaza anchors the pedestrian path connecting the residential dorms to the new recreation center entry. The main canopy works with the existing live oaks to provide shade for fitness spaces and a sidewalk that pulls the campus into the activity of the courts, lobby, strength and conditioning high bay, and an outdoor fitness terrace. The clear parti consists of high bay spaces (multi-purpose courts to the north and a 100’x200’ strength and conditioning space to the south) that flank the central bar of the lobby, bouldering wall, and locker rooms under the floating movement of the ‘white box’ containing group fitness, offices, and cardio mezzanines.
