The design of the new Rockefeller Center Rink Level Public Concourse honors the legacy of Rockefeller Center while shaping it into a vibrant and welcoming public space for the next generation.

Rooted in the historic architecture of Raymond Hood’s original campus, the project reinterprets classic materials and forms—such as bronze, fluted limestone plaster, and charcoal terrazzo—through a contemporary lens. Soft, curving geometries recall the elegance of the original detailing while also supporting intuitive movement and a hospitality-focused experience.

The previous concourse was dark, disjointed, and difficult to navigate. Access to natural light and views of the rink were limited to restaurant patrons. The new design addresses this by opening sightlines and providing equal access to light and views for all visitors. Flowing storefronts, indirect perimeter lighting, and continuous terrazzo flooring guide visitors through the space with ease and clarity. Inspired by the dynamic energy of Radio City Music Hall, continuous ribbons of light connect each area, adding rhythm, brightness, and a sense of movement throughout.

Ceilings have been raised by exposing the original steel and concrete structure, which introduces a raw and historic contrast to the refined material palette. This juxtaposition helps open up the space and alleviates the previously heavy atmosphere. Through a careful and historically informed design process, the concourse has been transformed into a more accessible, elegant, and inclusive environment that brings renewed civic value to a cherished Manhattan landmark.
