This accessory dwelling unit redefines the potential of urban infill by transforming a compact 3,750 square foot property—originally designed for a single residence—into space for two families to live and work.

Breaking the conventional form into smaller volumes, the project establishes layered boundaries that frame intimate gardens, outdoor rooms, and buffer zones. Each volume functions independently as a living or working space, yet collectively integrates with the landscape to support social connection.

Within its efficient 630 square foot footprint, adaptability emerges as the central design principle. The multipurpose room flexibly accommodates meditation, yoga, living, or collaborative work, while a bridge opens into an outdoor dining and meeting terrace. Lofted areas expand the compact program, serving as a guest room and library. Light, air, and greenery animate the interiors, with the structure itself shaping both privacy and openness.

This layered approach demonstrates how density can be introduced with dignity, sustainability, and elegance. Spaces are compact yet generous in experience, conserving both cost and energy while offering rich opportunities for connection to the outdoors.

Awarded an AIA Honor Award in 2023, the jury recognized the project as: “Beautifully designed and a great example of an elegant approach to designing an ADU… A very clear and reductive ADU with quite high performance.”
