Embassy of Australia

The new Embassy of Australia in Washington, DC brings the character of a vast and ancient continent into a prominent urban setting.

Designed by Bates Smart of Melbourne in association with KCCT as Architect of Record, the six-story diplomatic mission replaces the former Embassy on the same site, creating a contemporary civic presence that is open, welcoming, and distinctly Australian.

The architecture draws inspiration from Australia's iconic landscapes, from the sandstone monolith Uluru to native forests, expansive skies, and dramatic changes in light. A warm copper facade evokes the color and texture of Australia, while extensive glazing and a dramatic central atrium create a powerful connection between inside and out. Natural materials, including eucalyptus wood, stone, and polished concrete, reinforce the building's warmth and permanence.

At the ground level, the Embassy achieves a delicate balance between accessibility and security. The publicly accessible gallery is enclosed in double-height, low-iron glass, visually eroding the solidity of the building and inviting the public inside. Behind that openness, security is discreetly integrated into the architecture rather than expressed as a barrier. The building's massing, entry sequence, landscape, glazing, and structural elements work together to provide robust protection while preserving a transparent and welcoming civic presence.

Culture is central to the experience, with a permanent collection of First Nations artworks and rotating exhibitions celebrating Australia's artistic and cultural heritage.

The Embassy also reflects Australia's commitment to sustainability, achieving both LEED Gold and Australian Green Star certifications through high-performance systems, extensive photovoltaics, natural daylighting, native landscape strategies, and comprehensive stormwater reuse.
