We are honored to present this inspiring special feature! ByDESIGN™ Executive Producer Mike Chapman traveled to Queens, New York, to catch up with the incoming 2026 AIA National President, Illya Azaroff, FAIA.
Azaroff is a multi-talented leader whose career spans three decades, encompassing architecture, geography, and extensive work in disaster response, climate adaptation, and regenerative planning strategy. He is the founding principal of the firm +LAB and an active Educator, currently leading sustainability courses at the New York City College of Technology (CUNY).
Mike and Illya met in Queens to highlight Azaroff's deep commitment to utilizing architecture to make a tangible difference in the lives of people and communities in need. Their conversation specifically explores the powerful role design is playing in helping give students at the New Dawn Charter School a helping hand toward a better future.
